Most veterinary blood banks keep young, healthy dogs in laboratories to serve as donors. Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank
recruits dogs from the community to serve as volunteer donors, eliminating the need to incarcerate dogs for this purpose.
Donation
is 100% voluntary: if your dog isn't comfortable with the procedure, s/he will not be accepted into the program. No tranquilizers
or muzzles are used.
Blood donors receive many benefits, including hundreds of dollars worth of free bloodwork each
year (including annual heartworm test), lots of treats, affection, and attention.
Canine Mind's training facility
in Prince Frederick is an official blood-drive location for the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank.
